Our classroom was a blur of green today as the Kindergarten students celebrated St. Patrick's Day. We read an Irish folktale, looked for leprechauns using direction words, and made leprechaun hats to wear. While we did not find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, we did work with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We are learning to identify each coin by their special characteristics. For example, we know that the nickel is the medium-sized silver coin. We learned that the third president, Thomas Jefferson, is depicted on the front and the Jefferson Memorial is on the back. The side of the nickel is smooth like the penny, but unlike the dime and the quarter which are bumpy. It would be helpful if you could provide opportunities for your child to sort, examine, and name these coins at home.
Spring officially arrives on Friday, March 20. As we look forward to and enjoy the beautiful Spring weather I have reminded the Kindergarten students to dress for the weather. We have discussed bringing a jacket to school everyday since it can be chilly when we go outside for recess, especially in the morning. It is better to have a jacket and not need it, than to need one and not have it.

Dear Kindergarten students,
ReplyDeleteDid you know that a leprechaun appeared in the preschool room for a brief visit on St. Patrick's Day? He was mischievous while the children were out looking for him. When the students were lucky enough to spot him in their room when they returned, he was kind enough to help them pick up! He even shared some of his lucky coins with them!
Keep up the good work in your reading! I am so proud of you!
